Monica Roberts Place
We are thrilled to announce that SisTers PGH will be the new leaseholders of the building now proudly dubbed “Monica Roberts Place”!
Why Monica Roberts Place?
Monica Roberts, also known as the TransGriot, was a pioneering Black transgender activist whose tireless advocacy and groundbreaking work in journalism gave a powerful voice to the transgender community, particularly Black and Brown trans individuals. Naming this building in her honor is a tribute to her legacy and unwavering commitment to social justice and equality.
About Monica Roberts Place:
This newly acquired building will serve as a sanctuary and resource hub for Black and Brown transgender adults and seniors experiencing housing insecurity or homelessness. Our mission is to provide:
Affordable Housing: Safe, stable, and affordable one-bedroom apartments.
Support for Those with HIV: A welcoming environment with resources and support for individuals living with HIV.
Assistance for Foster Care Alumni: A supportive home for those aging out of foster care, ensuring they have a solid foundation to build their future.
Why This Matters:
Housing is a fundamental human right, and too many of our transgender siblings, especially those of color, face disproportionate challenges in securing safe and affordable housing. Monica Roberts Place aims to change that narrative by offering not just shelter but a community where residents can thrive.
This project is scheduled to open February of 2025 after much needed renovations. Applications to secure a unit will go live in October.
Stay tuned for more updates on our progress and how you can get involved in supporting Monica Roberts Place. Together, we can continue Monica’s legacy of fighting for justice and creating spaces where all are welcomed and valued.
